Barnard Music Jam and Card Party Saturday March 7th
It is time for the Barnard Music Jam. The Barnard Music Jam will be held on Saturday, March 7th. Food will be served at noon and music begins about 1 pm. At 7 pm card games will start.

Barnard Lions Club Fish Fry a Roaring Success
The Barnard Lions Club held a fish fry on Saturday, March 31st. An hour before the 5:30 pm opening, Lions Club member Jan Dowlin said there was a huge crowd waiting to get in. The doors opened early and approximately 150 people enjoyed fish, fun, and friendship.
Army Corp of Engineers to Inspect Barnard Levee
The Army Corp of Engineers will be in Barnard on May 1st and 2nd to inspect the levee that protects Barnard from flooding by Salt Creek. The inspections are necessary to maintain the integrity of the levee and to keep Barnard qualified to receive assistance should there be a problem.
During the last inspection, there were a few issues that were documented. These issues included trees that were encroaching on the structure of the levee and farming within the 15 foot limit from the toe of the levee. If the levee fails inspection, there may be a risk of Barnard being disqualified from receiving FEMA assistance and Army Corp assistance should the levee fail. Barnard would be completely responsible for maintenance and repair of the levee. The city asks that property owner's along the levee not cultivate within 15 feet of the toe of the levee or the ramps. If there are any questions about tree removal, contact the city clerk at (785) 792-6270.

Cafe Needs New Roof
Cathy Brockway has done wonders with the Salt Creek Cafe. Business continues to improve and traffic on Main Street in Barnard, Kansas has increased. It is great to see life in Barnard.
However, the cafe building is leased from the city. The city has been trying to figure out for months what to do about the roof on the building. Plans are to put a metal roof on the building and to insulate the roof to make the cafe more economical to operate. The current roof is deteriorating. The city has been trying to raise money for the project, but though there has been $2000 raised, the cost of the roof is $4500-$5000.
The city would appreciate any donations made to the cafe fund. To find out how you can help, call the Barnard City Clerk, Barb Rathbun, at (785) 792-6270.

Coleda Ione Hart
August 27, 1920 - April 2, 2012
Coleda Ione Hart, Barnard, departed this life on April 2, 2012 at Lincoln, Kansas. She was born August 27, 1920, in Barnard, Kansas, the daughter of George and Jewel Nelson. On May 13, 1941 she was united in marriage to Willard Alvin Hart at Junction City. She and Willard lived in the Barnard area for most of their lives. They owned and operated the Barnard Grain Company for 13 years while living 1 mile east of Barnard on the farm. She taught school at the Third Creek School, northeast of Barnard for a year after attending Fort Hays Normal School. In the late "40's", while Willard worked as a bus driver in Junction City and served in the US Army, she worked for the Junction City Transit Lines. Ione lived on the farm with Willard and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Barnard. After Willard's death in November of 2005, Ione remained on the farm until she moved to Lincoln Park Manor in 2011.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Hart and wife Dianna of Bogue, Kansas and Jeff Hart and wife Joy of Salina, Kansas; a sister Jane Olson of Arkansas City, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Melvin Hart of Barnard, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Clemma Stone of Arkansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and many that she considered dear friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willard; two sisters, Thelma Stanley and George Ann Stevens; and a brother Palmer Nelson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Barnard, Kansas with Pastor Dennis Finch officiating. Cremation has been chosen and has taken place. A private, family internment will be held a the Milo Cemetery, Barnard, Kansas. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to the Barnard Lions Club Scholarship Fund or to the Mexican Baptist Gospel Outreach in care of: James Nelson, 660 South Front, Salina, KS 67401.
