Barnard's high school closed in 1966 during the wave of consolidations throughout the state of Kansas. The grade school remained open until it was closed and moved to Lincoln. The BOE then demolished the schoool building, but left the newer gymnasium structure. Though the structure has been used as a machine shop since about the time of its closure, the building is largely intact.
Arlene Murray was the last teacher to teach in Barnard and after the closure, continued to teach in Lincoln until she retired in the mid-1990's. She is still an active resident of Barnard.
